Long Journey
MINSEOK KANG
In my Long Journey series I paint a path that leaves behind the temptations and fierce competition of the city and turns toward my own inner self. Against the backdrop of a dazzling yet cold and unfamiliar city, I project the confusion of identity and the longing for existence onto images of cars, making visible the psychological tension and anxiety of people today. Here the car is not merely a means of transportation but a symbolic companion on the long journey toward myself. In a world swept up by speed and competition, the car reveals the wavering of a self that has lost its direction, and it stands for the pressure to keep driving toward a destination that may or may not exist. The landscapes in these works appear motionless, yet they hold subtle vibrations of emotion. Within the flow of a city where time and space are mixed together, I build each composition by layering fear, anticipation, and unsteady feelings. This is how I map an inner journey through outward scenery, and it becomes a metaphor for a human existence that races endlessly between reality and imagination, past and future. Long Journey is not a reckless sprint but an expression of my resolve to keep moving and my instinctive desire for life. Like an owl spreading its wings in the dark, I hold on to the courage to set out even in silence, and I imprint those moments vividly on the canvas. In the end this series is a continuing artistic search in which I ask what my existence means and look for the answer, a journey toward facing the strength within me.
