[NFT] Scoops of Nostalgia — OrangeHare × KangCar · OpenSea Drops Featured

KangCar's ice cream series is offered through OrangeHare. Featured on OpenSea Drops, four NFT artworks are released.

When you think of ice cream, what sweet memories come to mind? Scoops of Nostalgia, a series by the Korean multimedia artist KangCar — who works in Busan and shows primarily in Seoul — expresses the artist's recollections and longing through ice cream. The series consists of four NFTs in total.

· Love Letter — a work based on a letter the artist sent to his first love · Love Me — the artist's childhood Christmas memory · With You — a Christmas memory spent with family · The Little Prince — time spent in the yard as a child

KangCar creates the fragments of an ice-cream cone using techniques such as cutting paper, dripping paint, and scissoring the canvas. These works are digitized in NFT form and preserved forever. KangCar calls them "works that help you briefly savor the sweetness of a life that will not last forever."

OpenSea Asked — In Conversation with KangCar

On 2 February 2024, OpenSea's official blog published an interview with KangCar, conducted by Stephanie Rheingold. It is the artist's own account of where Scoops of Nostalgia came from. What follows is what he said there.

The Car — A Meeting in 2015

The artist answers that he paints not the outward form of a car but the story inside it. The forms are distorted in order to hold identity, desire and inner conflict.

As his starting point he names a meeting, around 2015, with the professional racer Tadakazu Kojima, and the experience of a vintage Porsche 356a Speedster. From then on he began asking what passes between a person and a car, and how speed might be carried into painting.

The Ice Cream — What Was Left in the Studio

He completed a BFA (2007) and an MFA (2010) in Western Painting at Dong-A University. He entered web3 in January 2022 and released his first collection on OpenSea through OrangeHare.io.

The material of Scoops of Nostalgia is what remains in the studio: chips of dried paint, drips that ran and set. What would have been discarded takes the shape of a cone, is recorded in stop-motion, and turns without end. The artist calls that turning time and memory.

He Does Not Destroy the Physical Work

There is a practice of destroying the physical work to secure digital scarcity. The artist does not do this. He keeps both the physical and the digital.

The rotation did not begin at the front. Turning the object through 360 degrees, he found the rear and the side more compelling, and the rotation started there. Each work carries music made on commission.

To Keep Making

He expects AI and AR/VR to widen the range of NFT work. As an example of moving between the original and the digital he cites Damien Hirst's spin works.

He notes, though, that many who arrived in 2022 have since disappeared. Market trends move quickly, and the lifespan of a work has grown short. His conclusion is simple — keep making, and keep experimenting with materials.
