Paint Desert
MINSEOK KANG
'Paint Desert' is not a desert the eye can see, but a vast space that unfolds within my thought and imagination. Once a single thought takes root, the terrain shifts anew each day from that beginning. The small car in the painting is myself. The car seems to stand still, yet that stillness is in order to take in this wide space fully. What actually moves is not the car but the desert; the terrain, ceaselessly changed by the wind, is time itself flowing by. Because the desert moves, an illusion arises that it is my own direction that shifts. The color of the desert is not sand but green — a green land that is no barren waste, but a space where a wide imagination lives and breathes. I push out an abstract desert with a squeegee and paint an imagined landscape with a small car. To take up the brush in reality at last, even after lingering in a place where I fix my answer and only imagine — 'Paint Desert' is the record of that space between imagining and doing.
